Frequently Asked Questions

When you choose to invest in yourself, it’s a major step. You might have some questions! Don’t see yours below?

I’ve never met with a career coach before.
How does it work?

Mostly, it works how ever you want it to work. My goal is to be helpful to you. To help you Level Up professionally in whatever way you want.

Generally, women I meet with are working through a particular challenge in their career—they’ve taken on new responsibilities, they are new managers, their business/industry/department is undergoing a lot of change, or they just feel stuck and overlooked. Based on the frequency we agree on, we’ll likely meet one-on-one on a regular basis that feels right for your situation. Each time we meet, we’ll talk about your objectives and what’s happened since our last chat—what you’ve tried, how that’s worked, what adjustments or new tactics you want to try next. If you’re going through it, I’ve probably been there too at some point in my career. I’ll probably have a story to tell you about a time when I’ve seen a similar situation. But mostly I’ll ask questions and help you find the strategies that work for you and whatever you’re working on.

The term “career coach” sounds so … stuffy. How do I know if this kind of thing is really for me?

To be honest, I struggled a lot with what to call myself when I was setting up this business. The term “career coach” seemed pretentious. The term “mentor” didn’t quite communicate the specific relationship I wanted to have with clients. I toyed with “professional big sister,” but that seemed too hard to explain.

Ultimately, I want to use my own career experiences to help other women get what they want out of their own careers. If that’s what you want too, we can forget about labels and just call each other friends and colleagues.

What does working with a career coach cost?

As they say, “The first one is free.” Just kidding. Well, not really kidding. Because, yes, your first 30-minute conversation with me is absolutely free and without obligation. We’ll chat about you, where you are in your career, what kind of guidance you think would be helpful. And if it seems like we’re a good fit for working together, we’ll decide how often you want to meet. That frequency will help steer us to the right arrangement—and financial commitment—for you.

There’s a lot to be said about being ready and willing to invest in yourself. And when you hire a coach, you’re saying “I’m worth investing in. My career is worth investing in.” I truly want you to believe that when we work together.

But I don’t want you to think that calling it an “investment” is just code for “it’s expensive.” Because you’ll probably be surprised at how affordable it can be. My hourly rate is about what you’d spend for dinner and a drink or two at a restaurant. And packages are priced with some volume discounts and bonus services.

I’ve built my entire professional career by adding value to whatever project I’m working on. That’s my commitment to you too. That whatever time and money you spend on this service is worthwhile.

How and when and where do clients meet with you?

Generally I meet with folks before and after work, or on the weekend. Over coffee or drinks or ice cream. Sometimes for lunch, if our schedules line up. You’re busy; you have a job. I do too. Together we’ll work out what’s best for you.

Do you work with women in groups or one-on-one?

Most of my work is one-on-one, which allows me to customize your experience. But sometimes when I’m working with clients who are in similar situations, I’ll propose a series of small-group sessions. Such as:

  • a book club for women who have started a new job in the last 6 months

  • a workshop to gain confidence with speaking and presentation skills

  • a networking session for women who are seeking new jobs

  • a seminar about interviewing skills—for interviewers and interviewees

Whatever I’ve learned in my career, I want to find ways to share it with you so you can Level Up on your own path.

I see that you offer editorial services too. What’s with the combination of coaching and editorial?

My professional career has been a combination of being a passionate mentor and a heck of a good editor. Level Up with Karman connects me with people who need either—or both—of those skill sets.

I launched Level Up to give my mentoring and coaching skills a more formal platform, since being an editor is my “day job” already. But I would be foolish to ignore the fact that I can help people who need writing and editing help, too. Thus the two aspects of my Level Up business.

Like in sports, great coaches don’t get on the field with their players. They teach skills, evaluate each player’s needs, and give them an opportunity to practice succeeding. Career coaches like me work the same way. I’ll help you identify where you want to grow and help you develop the skills to get where you want to be.
